What is a Geographical Indication?
A geographical indication is a quality sign that identifies and guarantees the origin of a product, its distinctive characteristics, and the connection between those characteristics and the geographical area from which it originates. Through geographical indication registration, products that have gained a certain reputation due to their quality, traditional production methods, locally sourced raw materials, and regional characteristics are protected.According to Article 34 of the Industrial Property Law No. 6769:
Geographical Indication
A geographical indication is a sign that identifies a product whose specific quality, reputation, or other characteristics are essentially associated with a particular locality, area, region, or country of origin. Geographical indications are registered either as a Designation of Origin or a Geographical Indication. Food products, agricultural products, minerals, handicrafts, and industrial products may be subject to geographical indication registration.Designation of Origin
If all or the essential characteristics of a product are derived from the natural and human factors of a specific geographical area, the geographical indication in question is referred to as a “Designation of Origin.” The production, processing, and all other operations related to the product must take place entirely within the boundaries of the designated geographical area. Therefore, geographical indications registered as a Designation of Origin have a very strong connection with their place of origin.Geographical Indication (Source Identifier)
A geographical indication that identifies products whose specific quality, reputation, or other characteristics are associated with a particular geographical area, and for which at least one of the stages of production, processing, or other operations must take place within the defined geographical area, is referred to as a “Geographical Indication (Source Identifier).” When a product whose raw material or one of its production or processing stages takes place in the designated area is registered under this category, the remaining production and processing stages may be carried out outside the area of origin.Related Documents
